Newport City Council: Revitalize Our Skatepark

The City Council of Newport, Oregon has neglected our skatepark, and the youth who appreciate it, for more than a decade – resulting in a dilapidated, unsafe facility. The athletes who spend hours every day practicing their sport are left feeling abandoned and unrepresented. These are our kids and our neighbors. They take pride in our skatepark and are being ignored.

The condition of our skatepark has become dangerous since the city has chosen to neglect basic maintenance, landscaping, and even graffiti removal. The surrounding Sam Moore Parkway (including the children's playground) has fallen into disrepair. The condition of the area, the lack of lighting, and an absence of law enforcement has drawn transients and other non-park users to the area, exacerbating the problems.

For teenagers directing their energy into something positive, it's a challenging environment. For tourists who are visiting our city, it's a terrible first impression. For those of us who live in Nye Beach, it's an embarrassment. We judge ourselves by the way we treat our youth, and we are failing them.

The solution is not expensive, is not complicated, and only requires the Newport City Council to commit to making our youth a priority. We're asking them to revitalize our skatepark starting with the following simple requests:

  1. Patrol the entire area at least twice daily to establish that illegal behavior will not be tolerated on city property.
  2. Make necessary repairs to ensure the skatepark is safe.
  3. Develop a use policy specific to the skatepark, then enforce that policy.
  4. Commit to annual safety inspections of the skatepark.
  5. Provide regular maintenance and litter removal for the entire area.

Please help us inspire the city of Newport to change their culture, to put our children and neighbors first, and to clean up our beautiful Nye Beach neighborhood.
