Oct 24, 2017
The decision to fell so many trees at Woolsington Woods to make way for millionaire houses was one of the worst decisions Newcastle City Council made. It has had serious repercussions for wildlife and biodiversity in Newcastle and provoked outrage from thousands of people in and around the city, and further afield. We do not want to witness any such decisions in future. In response to this, and several other decisions by the council that affect wildlife and biodiversity, we set up a petition to Put Nature on the Map in Newcastle. Our petition calls on Newcastle City Council to conserve biodiversity and protect and enhance wildlife corridors; to create new wildlife habitats through increased planting of trees, shrubs, hedgerows, green roofs and living walls, and for the introduction of wildflower areas and weed killer free zones. More than 2,500 people have now signed our petition and we have requested a full council debate. The debate will take place on Wednesday 1st November, at 6pm, in Newcastle Civic Centre and it is thought our petition will be debated no later than 6.30pm. Meet at 5pm outside the Civic Centre, beneath the River God Tyne statue, to show your support and stand up for wildlife and green spaces in Newcastle. You can sign our ‘Put Nature on the Map in Newcastle’ petition here: http://bit.ly/2sncMxX We are also encouraging people to write to their councillors ahead of the debate, asking them to support our petition.
