France 3, the second largest French public television channel, has been filming members of Save Newcastle Wildlife for a documentary on the commodification of nature. The piece will explore how developers exploit environmental mitigation as a means of profit-making. We were thrilled that they have taken an interest in our campaign to partially represent this concept.
Smithy Wood in Sheffield, an ancient woodland currently threatened by proposals for a motorway service station, will also feature in the documentary which is due to be broadcast in October.
Widespread, wilful destruction of nature is taking place across our country, on a grand scale. And now it seems there is a lot of money to be made from it.
We have written to Guy Opperman - North East MP and well-known green belt campaigner - who recently welcomed the Secretary of State's decision to reject an appeal from a developer to build 280 on the green belt close to the Woolsington Hall site.
Many of his constituents have signed the petition to save Woolsington Woods, however, as the development is not in his constituency he has advised he is unable to support Save Newcastle Wildlife's campaign. The loss of Woolsington Woods will deal a big blow to the North-East's green belt.
We will not forsake our woodland and our wildlife. Our petition is still growing and we only 506 signatures needed to reach 10,000! Thank you for all your support.
