Toby, more bike lanes and buses
Sep 9, 2016 — Toby and I explored some more bike lane issues and the knotty issue of cyclists using pedestrian only paths. These are clips edited together but voiced live and unscripted in response to what is observed so no staged situations. I use the term "being taken out by a bus" I don't mean being hit by a bus. Bus drivers are careful to look out for cyclists but poor road design can mean having to manage a large vehicle in small spaces. Narrow or blocked cycle lanes can force cycles and vehicles closely alongside as the vehicles overtake.. When a bus or lorry passes too close to a cyclist the airstream first pushes the bike away towards the hazards of kerb, drains and parked cars. The natural correction to keep balance is to lean against the airflow towards the right. As the vehicle passes it creates a vacuum in its wake which pulls the bike the other way towards the lane of traffic. The unwary or inexperienced cyclist who is already leaning that way can be caused to veer into the path of any vehicle directly behind the bus. That effect of the airstream is what I am referring to and is far more common than an actual collision but very scary.
