Work For It!

The issue

The aim of this campaign is to bring  change to the already existing benefits system of New Zealand, and to make a more fair redistribution to the New Zealand taxpayers’ money. The purpose is to simultaneously close any current loopholes that exist with the current NZ welfare system and to put a stop to its exploitation, while also furthering New Zealand community spaces with community service work.

In a article published by News Hub, the reported that between the years 2013 to 2014, 46% of the recipients returned to the benefit within 18 months. For those who entered a low-level training, 25% found employment within 18 months, leaving 55% of the recipient returning back to the benefit. This clearly shows that people are finding it hard to have a long lasting and sustainable full time job. If If we don't do anything about this, it will result in people living in a cycle where they're constantly on and off the benefit. It's now our turn to say that enough is enough and help people find jobs.

As mentioned, our policy aims to change the way, the current Job seeker Support beneficiary system works. The campaign aims to implement a "work for the doll" system where eligible partakers will be given jobs surrounding community service. This in turn helps decrease our unemployment rate. Once the participant is given a job,  they will be paid minimum wage for the number of hours that their benefit is worth.

Conditions to deem one exempt from the “Work for the benefit” policy:

  • Those who are already deemed ineligible to receive the benefit
  • Those who full-time caregivers of children or other family members.
  • Those who are deemed unfit to work by a medical professional
  • Those who are legal minors or are above retirement age.
  • The policy proposes that government dedicate a reasonable financial amount towards jobs for the unemployed. On average, about 50,000 individuals who’ll take up the opportunity of working for the Government.  which means that about $1,485,000,000 will be needed to fund this.
