Kiwi birds are in critical danger. Over the last 750 years, 85% of their natural habitat has been destroyed. Agencies have converted those forests into towns or pasture lands that make the area uninhabitable. Not only has habitat loss affected these birds, but poaching as been another major cause of their population decline. Kiwis are unable to defend themselves against poachers who hunt them for both their skin and feathers. This has left only hundreds of certain species such as the Rowi kiwi which has been labeled as nationally critical by the Department of Conservation. 

           Without interference, kiwis will become extinct. Signing this petition will encourage New Zealand's Department of Conservation to allocate more resources to protecting kiwis. They should protect additional forests in which kiwis reside, police hunters, and creating even more sanctuaries. Also, providing financial support to both sanctuaries and other organizations that already help kiwis would prevent a further population decline. These innocent birds will continue to die, unless those changes are put into action.
