Battery farming

We would like to know why New Zealand are letting farms keep innocent animals in small cages. These small cages are called farrowing cages and battery cages, these cage make chickens, pigs, cows, sheep and many more other beautiful and amazing creature not able to live to their full potential. In this letter you will read about how these animals are kept on the farms and hopefully you will realise that this is not the way to run a farm.

Farrowing cages are used to contain a pigs. These pigs could be adult pigs or piglets, there are cases where a mother pig and her piglets are kept in ONE small farrowing cage, a farrowing cage is 60x80 inches big. The pigs do not get to stand up and walk around, they do not get to run and play in fields with other pigs, they do not get to live a normal life of a pig. The one question many people are asking is why are we treating animals like this. Winston Churchill once said that "I am fond of pigs. Dogs look up to us. Cats look down on us. Pigs treat us as equals." you see it is not just average everyday people who are against keeping pigs in farrowing cages it is famous people who are against it. We must change the way we do things in New Zealand we must change before it is too late.

Battery farmed hens. Although battery cages are now being phased out, it does not become law until 2022. This means that farmers are still keeping chickens in these horrific cages, not all farmers are cruel to animals in fact many farmers are starting to produce free range products which is great but not all farmers are humaine. People are still selling battery cages online and people are buying them still, the government has made no change towards this cause, all that has happened is that you have put a date to when it will become illegal, but even then some farmers will still do it. For this to change we must stop it now we mustn't wait four years to make a change. Brigid Brophy once said that “Whenever people say, 'We mustn't be sentimental,' you can take it they are about to do something cruel. And if they add, 'We must be realistic,' they mean they are going to make money out of it.” let's be honest this is more true than not, because if these battery farmers were not doing it for money they wouldn't be treating the animals like they are.

We could have big farms where animal run around and live a normal life, this is what New Zealand. So please we need to change the way we treat animals. This must change now, before it's too late.
