Why this petition matters

SAVE THIS NATIONAL TREASURE. STOP THE DEMOLITION OF RADIO NEW ZEALAND CONCERT.

Radio New Zealand Concert is one of the few public advertising free radio stations in New Zealand.

In today's world Concert is a rare treasure- No advertising, no shock jock politics and presenters who talk about the music not themselves. It is  somewhere where you can hear something new everyday.

Concert promotes New Zealand music and also features Jazz and world music programmes.  There are interviews with up and coming young classical musicians as well as internationally recognised artists.

Without RNZ Concert it is unlikely that young NZ musicians, our local orchestras and NZ composers will get exposure in their own country and the challenges New Zealand classical artists already face will be greater.

RNZ is replacing RNZ Concert with an automated non-stop music station which will stream online and play on AM radio. RNZ Concert will be taken off FM radio on May 29.

RNZ has justified this move with a mixture of divisive comments about the supposed age and ethnicity of its listeners and asumptions about the longevity of its audience.

Classical music spans multiple genres and has a diverse and growing audience. In the makeup of any orchestra or stars and chorus of any opera you see performers of all ages from around the globe.

WE ASK THE NEW ZEALAND GOVERNMENT TO INTERVENE AND  SAVE THE CONCERT PROGRAMME IN ITS CURRENT FM FORM.
