Aotearoa New Zealand has a proud history of standing up for justice. We opposed apartheid in South Africa. We said no to nuclear weapons. We’ve shown courage as a small nation with a big voice.

Today, that same courage is needed.

• In 2024, our Government imposed travel bans on extremist Israeli settlers.
• In 2025, it banned Israeli ministers Smotrich and Ben-Gvir.
• It has confirmed no military exports to Israel.

These are important steps. But they are not enough. Israel’s ongoing occupation, settlement expansion, and human rights abuses demand stronger action.

We call on the New Zealand Government to:

1. Expand travel bans to cover all individuals and entities responsible for settlement expansion, incitement, and violence.
2. Exclude settlement-linked companies from government procurement and Crown investment funds, as the NZ Super Fund did with five Israeli banks in 2021.
3. Introduce an Autonomous Sanctions Act (or expand the Russia Sanctions Act 2022) so that New Zealand has a permanent, principled framework to sanction states and individuals who commit serious breaches of international law.

We cannot wait for the UN veto system to act. Just as we stood against apartheid, we must stand for Palestine.
