Yes, over 28,000!
New Yorkers like you are tired of being afraid they may be pushed into the tracks. And some of our elected officials are hearing us! Taking the time to sign and share is what applies more pressure so keep on SHARING!
On this cold Sunday, I was reminded of the older man on his way to Church, who was pushed to the tracks at the Fulton Street station, shortly after Michelle Go's tragic death.
Luckily he lived to tell the story. Although hurt by the fall and the train, he was able to tell his scary story on the news. Some of you may have seen his pain and trauma. Barriers would have definitely prevented his injuries!
There has been some victim blaming lately claiming that people get pushed, because it is "their fault ," as an excuse that we do not need safety barriers. Yes, of course we should always stay alert, but we are also human beings going about our business in NYC.
Our lives should be valued by the MTA and elected officials! Saying it is the victim's fault is crazy and wrong!
Other countries and cities value their people by installing safety barriers.
New York can be creative and install them too! Enough with excuses, MTA! There are OTHER transit systems with different platforms and train sizes throughout their transit system which HAVE found solutions, because their people's safety comes first!
As reported in the attached article below: "Nearly 50 people were struck and killed by subway trains or found dead on the tracks during the first eight months of 2021, new MTA records show."
That means more than 6 people a month have died by trains! How many more before the MTA takes action!
Will barriers stop all deaths or all crimes? Of course not, but neither do seat belts stop all car deaths. Safety barriers do save lots of lives and give us riders some peace of mind!
We deserve no less!
Stay alert, stay safe, stay warm, continue sharing the petition!
Signed,
(Just an ordinary and fed-up) New Yorker ( like you)
