Demand NYU to Disinvite Linda Sarsour
Radical Alert is calling on New York University to disinvite Linda Sarsour from speaking on their campus on March 25, 2019. The university’s invitation serves as an implicit validation of her hateful message and is an offense to Jewish students on campus and nationwide.
“Linda Sarsour is one of the most divisive figures in America today, and her invitation only furthers NYU’s reputation as a hotbed of anti-American, anti-Israel, and anti-Semitic sentiment,” Radical Alert said in a statement. “We demand the university cancel her appearance and show Jewish students that hatred toward them will not be tolerated.”
Sarsour’s anti-Semitic message is well documented. She served as the president of Al-Arabiya, an organization with ties to the terrorist group, Muslim Brotherhood. She has called for a “Jihad” against President Donald Trump. And she has stated her support for Sharia law, a system in which women are inferior and homosexuals are punished by death.
Sarsour has refused to dissociate herself from Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, a known anti-Semite and bigot. Worth noting, Farrakhan recently compared Jews to termites and has called Hitler a “very great man.”
Radical Alert is committed to fighting for all Americans' freedom of speech – regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age, or disability. Jeffrey Rosen, president of the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, was quoted saying, "The American free speech tradition holds unequivocally that hate speech is protected unless it is intended to and likely to incite imminent violence." The Washington Post reported that anti-Semitic hate crimes rose 37 percent in 2017. This shocking increase is a result of hate speech spewed by public figures like Sarsour and Farrakhan, who intend to incite imminent violence against the Jewish people. Sarsour speaking will put the NYU Jewish community at risk.
NYU ignored her radical past in their speech announcement, championing her as a “racial justice and civil rights activist” who is best known for building bridges across “racial, ethnic and faith communities.” This is shameful, and the university must be held accountable.
Nearly 300 organizations, including the Democratic National Committee, had to pull out of the Women's March because they didn't want to be affiliated with Sarsour's radicalism. New York University should do the same.
Radical Alert will bring this issue to the attention of the Board of Trustees at New York University and make them aware that anti-Semitism on campus should not be tolerated.
