Compensation for NYU Paraprofessional Role

Compensation for NYU Paraprofessional Role

The Issue

The Paraprofessional roles at NYU (Resident Assistants and Resource Center Assistants) would like to ask for financial and emotional compensation due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic that has hit our communities and closed our residence halls. On March 10, we received information that we will not be continuing our paraprofessional duties and responsibilities as each Building Leadership Team will be handling regular tasks in the halls thus being 'released from the role'. On March 16, President Andy Hamilton sent a memorandum ordering all residents of NYU dorms to vacate within the next week and residents will be pro-rated for the cost of housing and meal plans. Hamilton did provide a link for requesting emergency funds from financial aid, however each student was limited to requesting $500 maximum. The next day, Senior Vice President for Student Affairs Marc Wais sent an email to all residents saying that they had 24 hours to vacate. If needed, students who are not able to go home had to fill out an exemption form stating the reasons why the resident has to stay, but 'the bar will be high'. Today, we received an email from the Provost and the Senior Leadership Team saying that work study students were able to complete their hours and will continue to be paid for the rest of the semester. This does not extend to paraprofessionals as we are granted a specific RA scholarship/grant towards our financial aid. We, the paraprofessionals, understand this uniquely stressful situation, but we are asking to be compensated for our housing and meal plans. We are asking for housing and meal plans to be pro-rated like the rest of the student body as we are a large part of NYU Student Life and our jobs heavily rely on these two components to live out our daily lives.
