New York State Education Department: Apologize for Anti-Israel Cartoon

The Issue

A test administered by the New York State Education Department included a cartoon that has sparked controversy because of its biased, anti-Israel message.

The political cartoon depicts three aggressive and boorish-looking Israeli soldiers using a table as a shield in battle; the soldier remarks, “I knew this peace table would come in handy some day.” This cartoon is blatantly anti-Israel, disparaging of Israeli soldiers, belittles the Middle East peace process, and is entirely inappropriate to include on a test administered to young minds.

The American Jewish Congress calls for an apology from the leader of the New York State Education Department Board of Regents, Chancellor Betty A. Rosa. As an educator, she should know that poisoning the minds of the youth with biased narratives is harmful, unproductive and downright wrong.
