New Yorkers: Please Help Bring Human Trafficking to an End in New York
The Issue
At this very moment, 300,000 American children face the risk of becoming victims of sex trafficking. Unfortunately, a large majority of Americans are unaware that this problem is truly domestic in nature. Erin Merryn's law aims to combat this problem by bringing education on the prevention of sexual abuse to children in schools. Erin Merryn legislation empowers children with their voice, instead of allowing sex offenders to silence them. The goal of Erin's law is to pass this legislation in all 50 states.
As of June 2014, 18 states have passed and implemented Erin's law- a huge victory for children across America. However, a larger number of American children are still left without this desperately needed education and protection, including those living in the state of New York. In January 2013, New York took the first step towards initiating this crucial curriculum in its schools when Bill AB661 was proposed to the New York Assembly. However, at the close of the most recent legislative session on June 20th, the bill had still not been brought to a vote. For more information on the proposed legislation please click HERE.
If we come together as a community, New Yorkers have the power to urge this bill forward. There are several ways that you can help. First and foremost, we ask that you show your support by signing this petition. Additionally, a 30 second phone call to your legislators can make an incredible difference.
