We Demand A Traffic Light at Route 9W and Malden Turnpike in Saugerties!

The intersection of Route 9W and Malden Turnpike in Saugerties has long been considered one of the most dangerous intersections in the county. Resulting in numerous accidents, with many of them fatal.
This intersection most recently took the life of Jeff Begreen who was only 35 years old. On the morning of October 14th, 2021 Jeff was picking up a load of stone in Catskill and was driving his dump truck back to a work site in Saugerties. On his way back, a car was pulling out of Malden Turnpike and was in his lane of traffic.
Jeff swerved to avoid the car which put him in the path of an oncoming school bus, which he also swerved to avoid. This caused the dump truck he was driving to hit a telephone pole, topple onto its side, slide down the roadway, and be hit head-on by the school bus. Killing him instantly.
In only four seconds, a life that was so full of dreams, promise, and adventure was over.
Had there been a stoplight, the other driver would have never pulled out on 9W, and Jeff would be alive today. Jeff died a hero for saving the other drivers but his death will not be in vain.
For years the NY State Department of Transportation, the Town of Saugerties, and Ulster County have been asked to put a stoplight at this intersection. Time after time they have neglected to do so and their oversight led to this tragic accident. Enough is enough! It's time to put up a traffic light!
