Higher Wages for ALL DSP Employees

The Issue

Direct Support Professionals (DSP) employed at the ARC of Oneida-Lewis NY are seeking higher wages. DSPs are responsible for the care, advocacy, support, transportation, health, safety, and overall well-being for People with Developmental and Intellectual Disabilities. Unfortunately, due to the low wages and high turnover rates, the People We Support and their families are suffering greatly. High turnover rates due to low wages means these individuals and their families are dealing with a “revolving door” of care providers. The constant need to train new DSPs interrupts the continuity of care that allows individuals with disabilities to reach their full potential. In order to increase the quality of care, more attention needs to be focused on improving job desirability and financial stability by offering career advancement opportunities.
