I know I am not alone when I say that what is happening to children and their parents at the border of our country fills me with rage and sadness. It's an acute version of the chronic rage and sadness I feel when I think about the unequal treatment children get inside our country every day—in our schools, and everywhere else. There is a lot of noise about school integration right now, and that's a good thing: It's the sound of people speaking up. We must hear and see each other clearly before we can work together on the changes that will make us a more humane and equal country. Last week's NYC Alliance for School Integration and Desegregation policy release event was thrilling. The room was packed—thank you to all of you who came out to listen and speak. At the event, we guided attendees toward five action steps. You can find them here: https://www.nycasid.com/take-action The first among them is to sign yet another petition, calling on DOE to create an Office of School Integration and Equity. Please sign and share widely; this is long-term work and it needs specific leadership and focus. If you are interested in the details of our policy plan, which suggests an inclusive process for tackling the huge problem of school segregation in addition to specific changes that can be made right now, you can find it here: https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5afd4002f7939252a8566b77/t/5b12afe1575d1fa70d2320ca/1527951378397/%23theagendaFINALFINAL.pdf We called it "Dare to Reimagine Integration for New York City's Public Schools" because that is what the task demands: imagination that we can share a better future. Re-engineering of a system engineered to benefit some at the expense of others. And daring, because it takes guts to challenge the status quo, and stamina to hang in there when it all seems too confusing and hopeless. So, dear person of imagination, heart, and conscience, consider making time this coming Wednesday to come to Sunset Park for the release of the D15 plan. The last meeting in this series drew both the Chancellor and two sets of protesters, not of the work being done in that room, but about the specialized high school debate. It's all related, of course. So come on out and show your support for real change.
