Condemn Hate Ads on NYC Subways

In New York, within the last 30 days, alleged hate crimes have been reported at a Muslim prayer service and at a Holocaust memorial site, elected officials recklessly accused a Muslim house of worship of being affiliated with terrorism, an anti-Muslim event including New York elected officials was held on the anniversary of 9/11, and anti-Muslim hate ads have been posted on New York’s public transportation system. At the same time, we have seen an increase in national incidents of hate crimes including attacks on Muslim houses of worship in Missouri, California, Illinois, and New York, and the horrific massacre of Sikhs during a religious service at a gurdwara (Sikh house of worship) in Wisconsin.
Despite the unsettling trends in our own city, many elected officials have chosen to remain silent when it comes to addressing the overall concerns of hate speech and extremist political rhetoric. In fact, some of our elected officials have welcomed and contributed to this extremist rhetoric in the political arena.
We are urging your office to stand up to the politics of fear and show the millions of New Yorkers, and the millions of visitors to this great City that we do not endorse hate speech, and that these incidents are not a reflection of the spirit and character of New York.
We are urging your office to provide a public statement in response to these displays of hatred. We are urging your office to publicly condemn these hate ads on our subway system and hate crimes in our communities as a stain on the character of our city, state, and nation.
We can no longer afford to dismiss the actions of hate groups without publicly reaffirming our commitment to the values of inclusivity and diversity that make this City great.
