Austin Hughes has been employed by The New York City Department of Corrections for nearly 9 years. He began his journey performing duties as a Correction Officer and on September 28, 2018 he was promoted to the rank of Captain, in which he took great pride and honor in achieving. He believes in defending what's right which stemmed from rushing to defend this country when he was able to graduate High School after serving in Desert Storm. He's always had a love for law and order.

Hughes waited 4 yrs to be called by The New York City Department Of Corrections after they lost his completed application. It was found when the Application Investigation Unit moved from Bowling Green to Lefrak City. When contacted by said unit with no hesitation the job offer was immediately accepted. He Immediately took pride in all his accomplishments and respected anyone in the field of law enforcement that has put forth effort in choosing this type of career. Throughout his career he had to sacrifice time, energy and money to climb the ranks and be the type of teacher, supervisor, and leader that he admired within the department. He promised to emulate each and every one of those supervisors he came across.

On June 10, 2019 he stood up for a fellow Captain so that they would not face disciplinary charges and took their post. Minutes after walking into the housing area he was assaulted by an inmate who was threatening to "take his face off". Said inmate's  departmental rap sheet is 6 pages long with assaults on staff and the department has yet to find a recourse of action to deal with such assaults on staff leaving staff to work in terror. In his atural nature, he acted first in attempts to stop any other act of aggression that said inmate may have  attempted after being physically assaulted. He wrote what he remembered and was honest in everything that took place. He wrote his report to the best of his knowledge and recollection. Seven days later he was suspended. Two weeks later he was modified. Three weeks after that, he was demoted. He took pride in everything he did for this department. However, the department failed him and every other individual who has been assaulted and tormented by said inmate. He has made some great friends along and has always carried himself with dignity, pride and honor. His demotion is a very serious issue that was judged and done unfairly. He took pride in everything that he did and would not jeopardize what he's worked so hard for by falsifying documents. Nonetheless, the questioning of someone's integrity who has served and stood by this department for so many years in baffling and disrespectful for everyone who has taken this oat so serious. Nonetheless, if there were any questions that may have needed clarity, he was not given an opportunity to write an addendum to his report to address said concerns. We want to thank everyone in advance who will support and sign this petition in attempts for him to be reinstated to the rank of Captain.
