Increase the budget for libraries by $65 million to provide six day a week service across the city.

The three public library systems (Brooklyn Public Library, New York Public Library, and Queens Library) are the most democratic institution in the City and offer aid and entertainment to all New Yorkers. The funding allocated to them in the 2014 budget is inadequate. While the library section of the budget is baselined from last year it is 20% less than it was in 2008 and 8% less than ten years ago. The libraries need to be open longer hours, hire more staff, and repair worn facilities. The people of New York City deserve modern, staffed libraries which are open six days a week and are accessible by families and working people.
