New York: Ban the sale of fur

A bill was just introduced by Council Speaker Corey Johnson in the largest fur market in the United States, New York City, that would ban the sale of fur.

This would be a landmark bill if passed that would sent ripples throughout the United States and create a domino effect in other states. In fact, New York is already a part of the domino effect, as Los Angeles and San Francisco have already instituted similar bans.

The Humane Society estimates that there are more than 100 million animals that are killed each year for their fur. We don’t need fur - these are needless murders.

High end designers are also moving away from the use of fur for their products. Michael Kors, Donatella Versace, Diane von Furstenberg, and most recently Prada all have banned the use of fur.

New Yorkers would still be able to buy used fur and furs for religious customs, but offenders would be fined $500 for their first violation, and $1,500 for each subsequent violation.

These bills are meant to curb animal cruelty. Animals that are killed for their fur are exposed to inhumane conditions, including traps that mutilate them and being trapped in tiny cages until they are eventually electrocuted or gassed.

Protect animals from torture. Urge New York City to join other major U.S. cities and ban the sale of fur.
