The Issue

With the recent installation of a life sized Woolly Mammoth statue in front of the Natural History Building on the main quad, I thought it was very fitting for our mascot to be a Woolly Mammoth. An article posted on the UIUC College of Liberal Arts and Sciences website called, "A mammoth tribute to Illinois history" briefly goes over the installation of the statue itself, and claims that, "paleontological evidence suggests that mammoths went extinct in Illinois about 13,000 years ago" making the mammoth a historic animal from the land that we live on today. On top of this, the mammoth shares traits similar to that of an elephant, typically displaying toughness, strength, and intelligence, three factors anyone would want their mascot to symbolize for their school. Please sign this petition if you think that the Woolly Mammoth is the right candidate for the new mascot of UIUC! Thank you!
