After a survey created by a group of concerned students was sent out, we decided to take action when the collected statistics showed increasingly high numbers of rape and sexual assault. There is a lack of knowledge of what sexual assault and rape is at New Trier. We want action to be taken against abusers and the survivors to feel seen and their stories to be heard. It frustrates me how someone can be suspended for drinking and plagiarism but not for raping someone. The school's motto is "to commit minds to inquiry, hearts to compassion, and lives to the service of humanity" if a new trier really means that they will take action on this subject. I think its important that all staff are educated on how to support those who have been sexually assaulted or who are coming forward to support themselves. We believe it's necessary for the school to be involved. We have goals that we would like the school to meet and we plan on taking action by talking to them as soon as possible. This concerned group of students wants change and it needs to happen now. please sign this petition to support spreading awareness of sexual assault and having more resources through out the school for survivors.
