Ever since 1888, when plastic straws were first invented, the devices became a staple in modern society. Plastic straws are found at a majority of restaurants, stores, and corporations;but recently, many large companies, such as Starbucks, have vowed to gradually remove them from their stores. The negative impacts of plastic straws have become more widely known today, and this movement was sparked by a video of a sea turtle with a straw stuck up its nose. Plastic straws are so small that even when recycled, they often still end up in in landfills. This garbage is then dumped into the ocean, where marine animals, such as sea turtles, mistake this plastic for food. In order to keep our oceans clean, our animals safe, and our lives more eco-friendly, it is necessary to start taking small steps to eliminate our environmental footprint. I am aware that plastic straws are a very small percent of the plastic in our oceans, about 4%, but any small change is one necessary to take. Plastic straws are only the baby steps preparing us for bigger environmental changes that will need to be made in the future. Let’s come together and push to make this change at New Trier!
