This petition is in support of a ban on formula retail businesses in the City of New Smyrna Beach, FL. A “formula” business is usually defined as a “chain,” or a retailer that has ten or more locations, and a distinct color scheme, decor, uniforms, etc. The purposes of the proposed ban include:

-Maintaining the unique character of the community and the appeal of its commercial districts.

-Protecting the community’s economic vitality by ensuring a diversity of businesses with sufficient opportunities for independent entrepreneurs.

-Fostering businesses that serve the basic needs of the surrounding neighborhoods, rather than those oriented toward tourists or regional shoppers.

Numerous communities throughout Florida and the US have adopted similar regulations, including Sanibel, FL, York, ME, and Mendocino County, CA.
