New Public Restroom on the Golden Mile -JFK Promenade in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park.
The Issue
New Public Restroom on the Golden Mile -JFK Promenade in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park.
In my 47 years of roller skating in Golden Gate Park, one of the most frequently asked questions I get is, “Where is the restroom?” To this very day the answer has been the same as it was when I first became head of the Skate Patrol in the park. In the East End of the JFK Promenade one can go to the restroom on the west side of the Conservatory of Flowers, or one can go to restroom behind the Bandshell in the Music Concourse. Today with JFK Promenade being closed to car traffic 24/7 more people are coming out to the park. They are enjoying the closed road, biking, running, skating and just flocking to the park especially on a warm, sunny day. When you consider that about 24 million people visit Golden Gate Park every year, the need for a new public restroom is very clear.
The purpose of this petition is to show support for this idea and convince the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department to begin the process of building a new restroom in the East End of JFK Promenade in Golden Gate Park. Finding the right location for this new restroom will be difficult at best, but I would like to suggest the area just west of 6th Ave. Skatin Place. This area is ADA accessible with a series of ADA pathways and a picnic area with special ADA picnic tables. The restroom could be set just behind this area, taking advantage of the infrastructure already in place.
The alternative is to continue as we have been. Our trees in the park could begin turning yellow because not everyone is willing or sometimes able to make the trek to the restroom in these obscure places in the park. No one wants that.
Thank you for considering this. Please keep me informed on the next steps to make this happen.
