End the New Orleans Traffic Camera Ticketing Program

The Issue

  • More and more cities and states are abandoning their speed and red light camera ticket programs as they have been shown to be either ineffective or cause a decrease in safety. The programs are also widely seen as unfair and possibly unconstitutional.

The traffic camera ticketing system has already cost the city over $25 million due to poor management. Despite this and overwhelming public opposition to the program, Mayor Cantrell and the New Orleans City Council continue to allow this system to operate.

During her election campaign, LaToya Cantrell promised to end the program. Now that she is in office, she is going back on her word. In an interview earlier this year, Cantrell stated that she, "doesn't listen to critics, [she] listens to what the people want." Well, now it is time to put your money where your mouth is and listen to what the people want.

Automation is not a proper replacement for quality law enforcement. It is time to end the New Orleans photo enforcement program.
