The Issue

Under the current system, New Mexico advances the clock by one hour for roughly eight months each year through Daylight Saving Time but returns to Standard Time for only four months. In practice, this makes Daylight Saving Time the default and Standard Time, our natural clock based more closely on solar time, the exception.

This also means that one side of the daylight debate, those who prefer later evening daylight, receives the benefit of a one-hour time shift for most of the year (8 out of 12 months). Meanwhile, those who prefer more morning daylight, including students, teachers, parents, commuters, and early-morning workers, experience Standard Time only during the shortest and darkest days of the year, and for only four months (4 out of 12 months). True fairness would suggest that if clocks are moved forward to favor extra evening daylight, they should also be moved backward at another time of year to provide extra morning daylight for those who prefer it. Instead, the current system shifts time in only ONE direction for MOST of the year, favoring one preference over another. We believe this approach is neither fair nor balanced for all New Mexicans.

Permanent Mountain Standard Time offers a balanced and consistent approach by aligning the clock more closely with natural solar time while eliminating the need for twice-yearly clock changes. It provides a single, stable time that treats all New Mexicans equally, regardless of their daily schedules or preferences. We believe New Mexicans deserve one fair, consistent, year-round time standard time that works for everyone. That's why we're asking for your support.
