Kyra Geissler started this petition to New Mexico San Miguel County Commission

Large events that take place in the limits of San Miguel County, New Mexico must receive a permit from the San Miguel County Commission (SMCC). SMCC issued a permit for Carson & Barnes Circus Saurus to take place at the Santa Fe Trails Event Center (Zamora Arena) on May 2nd & 3rd of 2019. This was done after the circus has had to pay fines to the USDA for counts of animal neglect (2016), and after multiple video documentations of animal abuse by trainers have circulated online (2007-2019). Some videos even depict trainers sinking bullhooks, long sticks with sharp, pointed ends, until the elephants scream, while they curse at them and encourage new trainers to hurt the animals as much as they can. Even outside of pure, unadulterated animal abuse, circuses in general endanger the animals, those who work with the, and those who attend the circus. One example of this took place in 2018, when the floor of a Carson & Barnes trailer transporting elephants caved in on the highway, and the animals were both injured, and able to break free. That shows that captivity has inherent dangers that can only be minimized, but never eradicated. For these reasons, circuses that use animals are not ethical, and therefore, we as a county should not give them a place to hold events. Therefore, we are asking for the SMCC to no longer permit circuses that use animals. We still want fun events to come to the community, and we would love to see more animal free circuses, such as Circus Garden, Big Top Out the Box, and Circus Millennia. Other options can also be monster truck shows, and carnivals.
