The Issue

A lot of people can agree with the fact this phone bill is ridiculous. Not being able to use it bell to bell? starting bell, to ending bell. With absolutely no excuses, buts, or what ifs. We could be in life or death danger and not be able to use our phones. To me and others this feels like a violation of our right to freedom. Coming from others as well as myself, not being able to use it while learning is completely understandable since cells phones are made to grab your attention and be addicting. What is not understandable or fair to a lot of people is not being able to use our cell phones in passing time, lunch, and generally the school grounds during school time. For a lot of teenagers the classroom is an overwhelming space, especially if you already have a lot of work for those classes and take more advanced classes. Most teens relieve the stress of this with music to their next class, I personally do the same. This can go the same for the lunch room. It’s overwhelming, hot, more people than could fit inside of a classroom. Music is a coping skill used many teens across New Jersey to escape from this overwhelming setting. This new law has a good idea, keeping the phones out of sight out of mind in the classrooms. In my school the use of phone pouches was way more effective, its easier to understand that you don’t need it when its time to do work, but they could also use it to help regulate themselves. Teenagers and kids take things easier when they’re able to understand the reasoning. Taking away something thats not causing anything with the environment is unreasonable. It’s extremely unfair to take away an important coping skill used widely just to take away phones in the classrooms. Not only can this make the environment more stressful, you can feel like your trapped. You cannot contact anyone from outside of the school, this sounds a lot like the need of control instead of actual care for their learning.
