Demand Yale University steps up to support New Haven during the COVID19 crisis.

Demand Yale University steps up to support New Haven during the COVID19 crisis.

The Issue

Yale University is responding to the COVID19 crisis by providing emergency overflow facilities for Yale Community members ONLY and are currently taking no action to protect the health and welfare of those outside their gates.  Yale University has a $30 BILLION endowment, available dorms and buildings, and unique resources that could support the ENTIRE community - not just "their people". Yale University is full of brilliant individuals who are in positions of power that could influence decisions and create plans for the good of everyone in the city. The economic disparities between Yale and the rest of the city are repugnant and to fail to offer support that could potentially save lives and provide basic needs for others in this moment of crisis is inhumane.  I am calling on President Salovey and the entire Yale community to act immediately, with the FIRST STEP being a commitment of $5 million to the COVID19 Emergency Fund to assist our neighbors in need: those without a paycheck, those unable to pay rent, those workers without childcare. And then get busy putting all your brilliant minds together to find ways to use your skills and resources for the greater good of all.
