In New Haven, 54% of residents don’t have access to affordable housing. 400 people live on the street with no housing at all. Every year, the rent goes while new housing is built that is impossible to afford. According to a 2019 DataHaven report, the average renter in New Haven is $17,000 short of affording a 2-bedroom apartment.

Last year, the City of New Haven received $115 million from the federal government’s American Rescue Plan to help recover from the effects of COVID-19. Mayor Elicker is proposing using $14 million for “housing-related initiatives."

We urge the city to increase the proposed amount of money allocated for housing from $14 million to $62.5 million: $50.5 million to buy properties and turn them into affordable housing units, and $12 million to provide monthly subsidies to 1,000 families on the Section 8 & Public Housing waitlists for two years.

Given the extent of the housing crisis in our city and the fact that existing housing access programs have proven to be insufficient, we urge our city to take advantage of this federal funding to create real solutions for the thousands of people who don’t have access to the basic human right of safe, affordable housing!

En New Haven, el 54% de los residentes no tienen acceso a vivienda asequible. 400 personas viven en la calle sin vivienda.
