On July 14th, 2019 thirteen horses were discovered on a farm owned by Robert, Judy and Sarah Woody on Greenville Loop Road in various stages of emaciation from starvation and neglect.  One gelding died on the scene, five others with body scores of 1-2 were removed and transported to a rehabilitation facility.  At this time four horses still remain on the property, three that are thin and one that is fit and healthy.  Per a statement released by the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office on July 30th, 2019, the New Hanover County Sheriff's Department has not found 'willful neglect' and is not pursuing charges.

Sarah Woody has an equine management degree from Martin Community College, was formerly employed by a local veterinarian and is currently enrolled in the Veterinarian Technician Program at Cape Fear Community College.  Sarah has also shown horses locally her entire life.  She has the knowledge and access to resources to care for her horses.  We strongly disagree with the Sheriff's Departments assessment there was no willful neglect.  One mare on the farm, that Sarah is currently showing, is being fed daily and is fit and healthy while the others, who all live on the same property, are in various stages of starvation and neglect.  This is the very definition of 'willful neglect'.

We respectfully ask the New Hanover County Sheriff's Department to investigate and the New Hanover County District Attorney's Office to pursue charges against Sarah Woody and her family for animal cruelty.
