Hi everyone. It's just eight days now until the trial is due to go ahead for the man who killed Juma. I am trying not to get my hopes up for a decent result, but I can take some consolation that he has had to watch his driving for the last year or so and is reminded of what he did every time he passes the place where the collision happened.
I have no news of the feasibility at all. I will push for some more information because it is never volunteered.
Edward Heron has resigned from his position as leader of the council and chairs his last cabinet meeting tomorrow. He is one of the good guys when it comes to protection of the ponies and has pushed for many changes. Tomorrow the council will be considering the introduction of Public Space Protection Orders against the feeding and petting of ponies, horses, mules and donkeys within the New Forest Perambulation. These actions draw the ponies to the roads whilst the donkeys act like highwaymen.
The New Forest National Park Authority have issued advice and information as the clocks change and the roads have become even more dangerous. This includes maps of the incidence of collisions across the Forest and highlights the particular dangers of the three busiest B roads. Worth opening to look.
Fortunately, my New Forest ponies are very happy in their new home. I cannot thank the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust enough for providing me with the best equivalent to the ponies' old life. Nevertheless, we still need to do something permanently to protect the animals on the Forest. The police operations can only have a limited effect on the frequency of speeding, and one wonders how many more people they would be catch if they weren't obliged to make themselves obvious. It just shows how many people get tunnel vision as they drive across the Forest, passing the ponies as if they are statues.
