Sadly I have to report a devastating weekend on the Forest where two mares, and one donkey were killed on the same stretch of road which runs from the A31 to Emery Down. This road would not be covered by the Average Speed Cameras even if they were installed. Lowering the speed limit seems to be the only option but if it is not enforced would it actually make a difference?
We also received the results of a court case again a driver from Bedfordshire who hit a mare in the B3054 at night, leaving her dying or dead, and driving on. The woman eventually phoned the police but 'luckily' by then the mare had been found and reported by other drivers. The woman said that she thought she might have hit something - the mare was left in such a state that I cannot share the picture but suffice it to say that she couldn't have been in any doubt. She was fined £600 with costs and given 6 penalty points for failing to stop and for having a vehicle in a dangerous condition. The offence of failing to stop at the scene of collision carries 5 to 10 penalty points.
Still no positive news about the feasibility study - six weeks after the Council meeting.
Such a sad image - the driver on this occasion did stop. The vehicle shown in the picture belongs to the owner of one of the mares - it was her son's birthday and this is what they woke up to.
