The Issue

Gevonte Hunter is serving 33 years to life for a 2011 shooting. He maintains that he was not the shooter.

Since his trial, people who say they witnessed the shooting have submitted sworn accounts stating that Gevonte was not the person who shot the victim. In his most recent request for a new trial, Gevonte asked for a hearing where an eyewitness could testify and be questioned. Judge Tammy O’Brien reviewed the written affidavit but denied the request without holding a hearing. The appeals court upheld her decision.

We disagree with that outcome. We believe these eyewitness accounts raise serious doubt about Gevonte’s conviction and a strong possibility that hearing the testimony could lead to a different verdict. A witness’s credibility should be tested through questions in court when a person is serving 33 years to life.

By signing this petition, you are saying you believe Gevonte’s new eyewitness evidence deserves an evidentiary hearing and a full, fair examination. You are also expressing concern that he may have been wrongfully convicted because these eyewitness if believed create a strong probability of Gevonte’s innocence.
