WHITE SULFUR SPRINGS, W. Va — Malcolm Butler is entrenched as the No. 1 cornerback on the New England Patriots depth chart, and he has more than held his own against Tom Brady and the team's offense, which has been working with a depleted receiving corps, throughout training camp.

Butler had some trouble with Drew Brees and the Saints Wednesday, though.
In one sequence during hurry-up 11 vs. 11s, Brees targeted Butler frequently. The second-year corner was called for pass interference on a comeback route run by 6-foot-6 receiver Brandon Coleman. Shortly afterward, Butler was beat down the sidelines by Saints wideout Joe Morgan for a long gain that put New Orleans on the goal line. And then Brees connected with Josh Morgan in the back of the endzone with Butler in coverage. This one, though, wasn't completely his fault. Rookie safety Jordan Richards appeared to be in position to make a play on the ball, but couldn't elevate quickly enough to get his hand on it.
Other observations from lovely White Sulfur Springs:
ABSENT: WR Julian Edelman, RB Travaris Cadet, WR Aaron Dobson, C Bryan Stork, DE Trey Flowers, CB Darryl Roberts, DE Rufus Johnson
PUP: WR Brandon LaFell, DT Chris Jones, OL Ryan Wendell, LB Dane Fletcher
NFI: OL Caylin Hauptmann
**Tarell Brown made a pair of pass breakups in a goal line drill. On one, he reached his right arm in and knocked the ball loose from Saints receiver Brandin Cooks, who otherwise would have easily scored a touchdown on the slant route. Brown continues to show flashes and seems like a safe bet to make the team.
**Heads-up play by Dont'a Hightower. Saints running back Khiry Robinson caught a pass over the middle and held the ball away from his body. Hightower, trailing Robinson on the play, poked it out and forced the fumble. Hightower has shed the non-contact jersey, and looks to be right on track for the season opener.
**The Pats used six defensive backs in the 11 vs. 11 hurry-up: Butler, Devin McCourty, Tarell Brown, Patrick Chung, Jordan Richards and Duron Harmon.
