New Baby Lullaby Policy Revision

The Issue

SSM hospitals, including those in Mt. Vernon, IL, have a cherished tradition of playing a lullaby whenever a new baby is born. This gesture is meant to celebrate the joy of new life, creating special moments for families and hospital staff. However, this tradition can unintentionally cause distress for mothers and families dealing with birth complications, experiencing loss, or struggling with infertility.

The lullaby music currently fills the entire hospital, echoing throughout corridors, patient rooms, mental health offices, and even grief counseling locations. For individuals facing sensitive circumstances, this constant reminder of new life can intensify emotional pain and hinder the healing process.

We propose that SSM hospitals revise their policy to ensure that the celebration of new births is balanced with sensitivity towards those coping with loss or difficulties. One actionable solution could be to restrict the music's reach, keeping it within maternity wards and specific celebratory spaces.

Statistics suggest that around 10-20% of pregnancies result in loss at various stages and that many more suffer in silence with issues like infertility. Taking a compassionate approach acknowledges these realities and fosters an inclusive environment where all patients feel respected and cared for.

Let's urge SSM hospitals to adopt these changes to provide a more considerate environment for all people.  Please sign this petition to support this request toward a more sensitive balance in hospital celebrations.
