Elko Trail System 2020

The Issue

Elko has several trails in the planning stages that can be combined with existing trails to create a trail network.  Some of the trails are on NDOT right-of-way. NDOT requires a show of Elko community support for those projects to happen.

Elko-SC Connection: A 5 mile path connecting Elko to 7-mile Spring Creek paved bike path. An NDOT January 2012 Technical Memorandum, Nevada Statewide Bicycle Plan, cites a path from Elko to Lamoille as 1 of 8 key infrastructure needs for the state.  The ongoing SW Gas pipeline disturbance presents a unique opportunity to utilize reclamation efforts for path construction.  SW Gas will do the work in their 2020 reclamation if provided the $200,000 materials. As it stands, the disturbance will be reclaimed to support future path construction.  This reclamation could begin as early as October.  SW Gas can work a path into their 2021 bid.  This is a time-sensitive opportunity for which public support could be influential in helping NDOT justify the expense and focus on this path.

CA Trail Center Path: A 7-mile path connecting Elko Exit 298 to the California Trail Center. Reference, The Elko Daily Free Press report on Sep 14, 2018, Bike Path to Connect Elko to Trail Center.   This project has lost momentum; it would be a great inclusion in an Elko Trail System.
