For the preservation of the skate culture at the Neue Nationalgalerie:

The national gallery has been a part of berlin skateboarding culture for over thirty years now. Since reopening on 22nd August, skateboarders from around the globe came back to skate at and enjoy this amazing spot. Two months later however, skaters turned up on 23rd October to find that skateboarding would no longer be accepted by the gallery which was a huge disappointment to many. 

What is the goal of this petition? 

- To establish an agreement/understanding between the skateboarders and the museum

- For skateboarding to be permitted outside the museum (if not always, then at least times when the museum is closed.

In the past people have been quick to see skateboarding in a negative light, but in more recent years society has started to move past this narrow mindset and it is  now even recognised as an olympic sport. 

What do the artists of the gallery think?

This beautiful quote is taken from the website of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation. The interview is with well-known German artist Veronika Kellndorfer, who had work featured in the gallery earlier this year. 

"If you stand in the hall on a Sunday afternoon and see the skaters outside, then this famous flow from inside to outside really arises, then, to come back to your question, it really tips into a work of art. This ambivalence fascinates me very much. I am interested in this “tipping moment”, where architecture becomes image."

MACBA museum, Barcalona

MACBA museum in Barcalona is another great example of a cultural site embracing the benefits of skateboarding. Skateboarders have been gathering at MACBA museum for many years and it is now perhaps the most famous skatespot in the world, gathering international attention and tourism to the museum. Not only that but it also creates an inclusive and open community that socialises and exists in these very spaces.

Casa de Musica, Porto

'Casa de Musica' in Porto is another popular spot for skateboarding in Europe. The concert hall there became popular in the early 2000s when Porto didn't have as great skate facilities as it does today. Below are some of the thoughts of the production director of the concert hall back when skateboarders first started going there many years ago. 

"We already knew that these waves would be desirable, it wasn't a big surprise for us. The biggest turnout is at weekends, when we see not only skaters, but also people of all ages with roller skates and bicycles. they bother us minimally; on the contrary, we even like to see how our surrounding space is used for leisure"

The next quote is from an architecture web-forum, where a local discusses what impact skateboarding has had on the building:

"The square itself represents a travertine paved combination of cascades and hills, so much loved by the local skaters. Quite frankly this space is by far my favorite part of this project, and here is why. By making the connection between the subject and the surrounding, architect makes sure his creation is emerged in life 24/7 and year-round. CDM is not a single purpose concert hall anymore, it’s a landmark. It’s a destination, a place to meet, hangout and get inspired. On top of which it makes the work of architect memorable, talked about, photographable."

Die Neue Nationalgalerie ist seit nunmehr 30 Jahren ein wichtiger Ort der Berliner Skateboardkultur. Seit der Wiedereröffnung am 22.08.2021 nach mehrjähriger Bauzeit wurde dieser Spot mit großer Freude von Skateboarder*innen aus der ganzen Welt wieder besucht. Zwei Monate später allerdings, ab dem 23.10.2021, wurde Skateboarding auf dem Gelände nicht mehr länger akzeptiert, was ein großer Verlust für Skater*innen darstellt.

Was sind die Ziele dieser Petition?

- Einen Kompromiss zwischen den Skateboarder*innen/dem Museum über skateboarding auf dem Gelände zu finden

- Die Erlaubnis für Skateboarder*innen erhalten auf dem Außengelände des Museums zu skaten (wenn nicht während der Öffnungszeiten möglich, dann zumindest außerhalb der Öffnungszeiten)

Auch wenn in der Vergangenheit Skateboarding häufig in einem negativen Licht gesehen wurde, beginnt sich die öffentliche Wahrnehmung nicht zuletzt aufgrund der Aufnahme von Skateboarding als olympische Disziplin mehr und mehr zu wandeln.

Was denken die Künster*innen, die in der Nationalgalerie ausstellen über Skateboarding?

Dieses wundervolle Zitat stammt von der Website der Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz, welche ein Interview mit der bekannten deutschen Künstlerin Veronika Kellndorfer veröffentlicht hat, deren Werke in der Neuen Nationalgalerie ausgestellt sind.

„Wenn man an einem Sonntagnachmittag in der Halle steht und draußen die Skater fahren sieht, dann entsteht wirklich dieses berühmte Fließen von Innen nach Außen, dann kippt es wirklich, um auf Deine Frage zurückzukommen, in ein Kunstwerk. Diese Ambivalenz fasziniert mich sehr. Mich interessiert dieser „Kipp-Moment“, wo Architektur Bild wird.“

MACBA Barcelona

Das MACBA-Museum in Barcelona ist ein weiteres großartiges Beispiel, wie Kunst und Skateboarding symbiotisch verbunden werden können. Das Museum wird seit Jahrzehnten als Hotspot von Skater*innen angesehen und ist wohl einer der bekanntesten Skatespots der Welt, wodurch das Museum noch weitere Aufmerksamkeit und einen Zuwachs an Tourismus erfahren hat. Hierdurch hat sich rund um das Museum auch eine offene und inklusive Jugendkultur gebildet, die in dieser Form wohl weltweit einzigartig ist.

Casa de Musica, Porto

Auch Casa de Musica ist ein europaweit bekannter Skatespot. Die Konzerthalle wurde ab Anfang der 2000er Jahre vermehrt von Skater*innen entdeckt, was vor allem daran lag, dass es kaum Skateparks in und um Porto gab und gibt. In den unten stehenden Zitaten können einige Gedanken des Produktionsdirektors der Casa de Musica zu den Skater*innen nachvollzogen werden.

„Wir wussten bereits, dass diese Wellen wünschenswert wären, es war keine große Überraschung für uns. Der größte Andrang ist an den Wochenenden, wenn wir nicht nur Skater, sondern auch Menschen jeden Alters mit Rollschuhen und Fahrrädern sehen. sie stören uns minimal; im Gegenteil, wir sehen sogar gerne, wie unsere Umgebung für die Freizeit genutzt wird„
