Reopen Shap Railway Station
The Issue
Shap Railway Station served the market town of Shap until closure in 1958.
The bus service to Penrith (where there is a railway station) has recently been withdrawn making Shap more car dependent than it had been previously.
Reopening the railway station would give residents a reliable source of transport and help to reduce traffic in the town.
It would also be beneficial to visitors and tourists visiting Shap to see Shap Abbey and walkers in the surrounding countryside.
The new railway station could be served by a local Preston to Carlisle stopping service running hourly. The service would also call at reopen stations at Grayrigg and Tebay.
