Ariana Grande was recently cast in The Prom Musical’s Movie as Alyssa Greene. In addition to not fitting the role because her voice is too poppy and lacking the diction to properly be in a broadway movie, Ariana is white. Alyssa is currently played by a woman of color, and although she was once played by a white woman - Anna Grace Barlow - the transition from a white woman to a woman of color is far different from that of the transition from a woman of color to a white woman. Alyssa offers representation for girls - more specificaly women of color - who did not have the representation of a lesbian of color. Ariana is not a woman of color, so casting her as Alyssa is a very poor choice and will not give the representation that Isabelle McCalla does. Ryan Murphy and Netflix, please rethink this decision and recast Alyssa.
