The recent film adaptation of Jay Asher's book "13 Reasons Why" has successfully started a conversation about adolescent suicide, which is both positive and needed.  Millions of teens and adults around the world have watched and are talking about the production.  While the series has the potential to change individuals in very positive ways, it could also have very negative, possibly life-threatening effects on certain audiences.  For that reason, we are petitioning Netflix, along with the author, executive producers, and actors of "13 Reason Why" to add the following two items to the series:

1. At the beginning of the series, we would ask for a disclaimer to be added clearly stating that the series is not intended for individuals who struggle with suicidal thoughts/ideation or for individuals who have had a close friend or family member complete suicide.  For individuals who struggle with suicidal thoughts and ideation, being exposed to such a graphic portrayal of suicide carries a very real risk of suicide contagion and the show's depiction could serve as a how-to for vulnerable adolescents.  For these individuals, seeing the potential harm suicide may cause for individuals who have mistreated them in the past may also be very appealing.  For individuals who have had a close friend or family member complete suicide, the series has the potential to increase their feelings of guilt and blame to unmanageable levels.  The "what ifs" that come from viewing the series could be extremely painful.  We recognize that three of the episodes in the series already have disclaimers, but by the time a viewer gets to those episodes they are hooked and it is very unlikely they would turn away at that point.

2. We understand that even with a disclaimer at the beginning of the series, many vulnerable individuals may still choose to watch, and because of that we would ask that a resource list, similar to the resource list found at 13reasonswhy.info be added at the end of each episode.  This will ensure that these individuals have access to help, without the need to take additional steps of looking up resources on the internet, while their feelings are still fresh.

It is important to note that we respect the right of Netflix, along with the author, executive producers, and actors of "13 Reason Why" to continue showing the series, but in light of the potential negative effects that viewing could have on vulnerable audiences, we would ask that the requests outlined in this petition be added.  Thank you.
