Netflix, Make All Nollywood Titles Globally Accessible, Now!

The Issue

Netflix has been a crucial platform for storytellers across the globe to share their narratives. However, there is an unfortunate restriction currently in place, where Nollywood titles, the representation of Nigeria's vibrant cinema, are restricted for streaming to Nigeria only. This is depriving global audiences of the opportunity to explore and appreciate Nollywood's rich storytelling, dramatic performances, and immersive depictions of Nigerian culture and trends.

It is a fact that Nollywood is the world's third largest film industry, producing around 2,500 films annually. These movies showcase the culture, traditions, stories, and talents of Nigeria. Sidelining these diverse narratives from global availability on a platform as universal as Netflix, is a potential undermining of art, culture, and talent.

Being that Netflix is valued for its diverse content that marks its presence across 190 countries, restricting Nollywood titles appears to be an exception to this most vaunted global reach. An exception that certainly raises questions concerning cultural inclusivity and respect for all forms of storytelling, not just from Nigeria but Rich Beautiful Black Africa as a whole. Some will say; "It is Digital Apartheid."

Limiting access to this exceptional African repository deprives global audiences the opportunity to learn, enjoy, and appreciate Nigeria's unique African narrative and its unique cinematic approach. Therefore, we strongly and humbly, urge Netflix to reassess their policy on the matter and ensure that Nollywood Titles are made available for streaming globally, providing an equal opportunity for audiences all over the world to appreciate and experience Nigerian narratives and culture, ensuring film enthusiasts everywhere are exposed to the variety, depth, and richness of Nigerian storytelling, thereby fostering an inclusive global society and prosperity for all.

If you believe in the power of narrative multiplicity and cultural inclusivity, please sign this petition to support the global availability of Nollywood titles on Netflix. Join Africa in asking that Netflix immediately removes all limitations and expand the streaming availability of Nollywood titles globally. And even better, share it with your friends and families worldwide. Together, we can make a change.
