Netflix: Add Trigger Warning for Portrayals of Animal Cruelty, Death, and Dismemberment

The Issue

Netflix, as one of the leading streaming platforms in the world, you have great influence on the entertainment industry. Please acknowledge that many of us love animals and find portrayals of their mistreatment, killing, and dismemberment to be very disturbing. I am not asking that this content be removed from your platform, but simply that viewers are warned if a movie or TV episode contains disturbing content related to animals so that we can make an informed decision about whether to view it.

This petition was prompted by “The Power of the Dog.” This is a Netflix film in which the main protagonist, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, is portrayed beating a horse and later graphically castrating a bull.

Benedict Cumberbatch apparently practiced castrating actual bulls as part of his “ranch training” for the role.

The movie was filmed in New Zealand and DOES NOT contain any guarantees that animals were not harmed in the making of the production.

The movie additionally shows a main character, played by Jesse Plemons, dissecting a rabbit which he caught and killed. There are further scenes of minor characters hanging, skinning, and gutting cows. We can only infer that they killed actual cows and rabbits to produce this movie.

Animal lovers like me would appreciate knowing that this sort of material is contained in a title before we decide to click on it.

Thank you for considering my petition.
