It is the ranches and mineral industries that have encroached on the mustangs' land not the other way around Horses are native to North America. They crossed the Bering Land Bridge into Europe during the Ice Age. The Spaniards then brought them back over after some number of years. Yes domesticated Spanish horses were bred with the horses that crossed the land bridge, but the genes of those truly wild ancestors still exist because the Spanish bred their horses to retain some of the traits of the wild horses. They will never overpopulate the west. Nature takes care of itself. The BLM has removed so many horses for slaughter now that overpopulation would not be any problem at the current time. Instead of having biologists in the BLM deciding the best ways to cut down on the number of horses on a range, BLM biologists should be studying each herd and keeping track scientifically whether any damage is actually being done. If no damage is being done, which in most cases it isn't, the horses should be able to live in their homeland unimpeded. Let's remember they were here long before the commercial ranches and mineral extraction companies. If morals are not enough how about a monetary reason to sign this petition. Millions of dollars in taxpayer money is used every year to roundup these horse and transport them to be slaughtered for no reason other than a few ranchers feel they are stealing cattle grazing land. Is this really something you want your tax dollars spent on?
