Ridgewood neighbors!

We need a pedestrian-friendly intersection at Fairview Ave and Stanhope Street, and we need it NOW!

Let’s tell the Department of Transportation (DOT) we want crosswalks and stop signs at this overlooked and dangerous corner.

WHY?   Why is it so hard to cross the street to Grover Cleveland Park? It shouldn’t be this way! A neighborhood park should be safe and easy to get to. But crossing Stanhope Street at Fairview Ave to reach the main entrance is a treacherous task. Why? Because there are no crosswalks or stop signs at this T-shaped intersection to make drivers slow down and yield to pedestrians. This absence of traffic signage has already caused one fatal accident. Let’s make sure that never happens again.

FACTS   In 2019, a Ridgewood man was tragically hit and killed by a car at this very intersection. Yet the Department of Transportation recently rejected our local Community Board’s request for traffic signs here. We are building pressure to change that decision.

STATS   New York City is experiencing an epidemic of traffic violence: 2021 saw hit-and-run crashes up 45% from the previous year, with 273 pedestrian traffic fatalities.

“Intersections should be sacred spaces,” DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez recently declared at a press conference. She and the Mayor plan to make “targeted changes” at more than 1,000 intersections in 2022. Let’s see to it that our intersection is one of them.

We demand the DOT install CROSSWALKS AND STOP SIGNS at the intersection of Fairview Ave and Stanhope Street, so we can walk to our neighborhood park safely.
