The Issue

Beaufort West, Western Cape

This issue is about the tragic and preventable loss of Sam, a beloved 8 year old Labrador whose life was taken in a brutal attack on his own private property by a neighbour’s dog. This was not a sudden or unpredictable incident - the dog had already shown that it could escape by jumping over the electric wall, creating a known and ongoing danger to everyone in the area. Despite this, nothing was done to properly secure it.

What happened to Sam was horrific and deeply traumatic for those who witnessed it and it has left a lasting emotional impact on the community. No family should have to experience the pain of losing a pet in such a violent way, especially when it could have been prevented.

The neighbour responsible for his Pitbull failed to take adequate steps to secure an animal that had already shown it could escape its property. He had previously threatened neighbors, showing a disregard for the safety of others and an understanding of the potential danger his dog posed. This was a known and foreseeable risk, yet no effective action was taken to prevent it.

Responsible pet ownership requires ensuring that an animal cannot pose a danger to others, and in this case, that responsibility was not met. What is even more concerning is that the threat still remains, and there has been little reassurance that meaningful changes have been made to prevent another attack. This has left residents feeling unsafe, unheard and at risk in their own community.

If this could happen to Sam, we must ask - what happens when it’s a child next?

We are calling on the Beaufort West municipal council, the SPCA and the dog’s owner to take immediate action - and for better dog control resources to prevent future tragedies. Your support can help ensure our community is safe and that no other family suffers like this.

RIP Sam #justiceforSam
