Our Mom is on hospice and we can not see her. The nursing home has told us they are too busy to make a daily phone call to update us on her condition. We can not speak to the Dr, or reach them by phone. They have cut off all FaceTime calls, they refuse to allow a patient to get last rites via FaceTime. Now that our Mom is in an active stage of dying they still refuse us entry except for 1 hour.  Our Mom suffers from Alzheimer’s, she doesn’t know why she is alone. She spent the last 4 weeks in bed alone, curtains drawn. She had no stimulation . We want to be able to be there for her during her last hours, yet they refuse to let us. Unfortunately This situation is not unique to my Mom. Memory Care patients need our help. This is happening across the board in Nursing homes. Advocacy groups are helpless. 

During COVID nursing homes need to communicate with families and allow family to come in when a patient is actively dying. Being understaffed should not be an excuse. The emergency order should not allow nursing homes to completely cut off families from their loved ones. Patients in nursing homes need our help. Basic rights are being violated.  Families are left to ringing phones with no answers , no voicemail. In the effort to protect the most vulnerable we are literally causing their death.
