The Issue

The Commissioner of Education in Florida, Richard Corcoran, has mandated that “All school boards and charter school governing boards must open brick and mortar schools in August at least five days per week for all students.” In a feeble attempt to justify the "logic" of this mandatory order, Department of Education spokeswoman Cheryl Etters said, “Logically, I don’t think they could say schools aren’t safe if they are allowing people to be out in public.” So the thinking here, or lack thereof, is that If people are allowed to leave their houses, then their children are safe to be mandated to brick and mortar classrooms. DeSantis and Corcoran both have kids. Do you really think their kids will be sitting in brick and mortar classrooms in August?

Isn't the whole GOP mantra about limiting government? On every level, they have done the opposite. This is not an authoritarian dictatorship, yet they hand down mandate after mandate. When Trump tweeted that all schools must open in August, the puppet in Tallahassee immediately bowed down and followed suit.

The fact that teachers and parents and students had no say in this decision is deplorable. I think all of us invested in education in Florida, not just teachers, but everyone who has kids, need to let DeSantis and Corcoran know that this appalling ignorance and blatant disregard for the safety and welfare of our students and teachers is unacceptable.

Sign the petition to refuse Corcoran's mandate and then spread the word. Enough is enough.
